Spotlight on Ministry: Deacons

Each month during 2006, we shined the spotlight on one of the vital ministries and missions of First Presbyterian Church. We hope this helps you get a clearer picture of what the church does and - if you are ready to volunteer - how you can help.

Spotlight on the Deacons

What We Do and Why:

Deacon is defined as a church officer or lay minister. In our church, they are the people charged with ministering to those in need. In the book of Acts, the twelve disciples chose seven additional men to handle a daily food distribution to Grecian widows, so that they might devote themselves to prayer, and the ministry of the Word. This would seem to be the model for our board. We currently have twelve members, and are hoping to add two additional positions for a total of fourteen for 2007. Some of the things we do are: Communion preparation, coordinate the prayer chain, responsible for the Parish Plan, lead the convalescent hospital service monthly, coordinate home visitation, arrange transportation to the Sunday services, or other times where needed, serve on the nominating committee, provide support services after a hospital stay or memorial service, send sympathy, get well, or notes of congratulations as appropriate, and our own moderator, vice moderator, secretary, and treasurer.

Those currently involved are: Elizabeth Hale, moderator; Suzy Zeigler, vice moderator and secretary; Matt Larrabure, treasurer, and convalescent hospital; Sharon Manson, communion; John Richards, prayer chain; Bonnie Donavan, parish coordinator-kitchen; Dave Bartruff, and Mary Ann Laslo, parish coordinators; Bill Schrader, social secretary; Connie Ahlman, support services; Linda Fitzgerald, transportation; and Mike Horn, visitation.

Volunteers Needed:

Volunteers are always welcome, and you can contact Elizabeth Hale, or any of the Deacons if you have a particular area of interest. As you can see, the ministries involved are primarily those of service, or a gift of helps, or mercy. To God be the glory!
