Spotlight on Ministry: Facilities Commission

Spotlight on Ministry

Each month during 2006, we shined the spotlight on one of the vital ministries and missions of First Presbyterian Church. We hope this helps you get a clearer picture of what the church does and - if you are ready to volunteer - how you can help.

What We Do and Why:

The people of Israel, including the Levites, are to bring their contributions of grain, new wine and oil to the storerooms where the articles for the sanctuary are kept and where the ministering priests, the gatekeepers and the singers stay.  "We will not neglect the house of our God."  Nehemiah 10:39 (NIV)

The Facilities Commission’s number one goal is to ensure we don’t neglect our church.  The maintenance of the current buildings is one of the commission’s top priorities.  The existing campus was originally built in 1963 and the age of the buildings and lack of on-going maintenance is taking its toll on the buildings.  One of the most recent age related projects was the remodeling of the sanctuary, which was necessary when some of the main structural beams were found to be cracked.  An up coming maintenance project will be replacing the 30+ year old roofs on the Koinonia and CE building.  The roof project is schedule for this August.

Other recent projects included upgrading the wiring in the kitchen and replacing the appliances.  The Youth Commission spent their summer mission trip fixing up the upstairs of the Agape house, which has now has become usable space once again.

The commission is constantly reviewing the facility usage and ensuring that we have the facilities available to support current and new programs.  The current programs can sometimes stretch the facilities to the limit and scheduling is very important to meeting everyone’s needs.  Supporting new programs will take planning to ensure that the necessary facility space is available.

The commission also looks at the future needs of the congregation and tries to anticipate what facility space will be required.  To meet these future needs we are exploring what can be done with our existing buildings, looking at the possibility of using off-site facilities or adding a new building to our campus.
